After only a week of living in China, Dre begins to feel intense fear all the time, expecting the bullies to abuse him at any moment. He has to constantly avoid them and run from them while in and out of school.
The maintenance man at the hotel where Dre and his mother is staying, turns out to be a Kung Fu master and volunteers to teach Dre.
This movie takes us through Dre's journey and his struggle to keep his friendship with a Chinese girl in his class while training to compete in a Kung Fu competition and learning his strength within.
My Rating
I give this movie 5 stars and 2 thumbs up. Great acting, great action scenes, great story line, constantly engaging! What more can I say? The movie had me at the edge of my seat most of the time. I was so engaged that I didn't even care to eat the snacks I brought along with me.
Jaden Smith
Jaden Christopher Syre Smith is an amazing actor! Like father, like son. Will Smith should be proud of his son. Jaden had me in tears, he made me feel his pain, his frustration. His acting was flawless. If you thought he was good in "Pursuit of Happyness" you haven't seen anything yet.
Jaden played the lead role of Dre Parker and he played it well. Jaden WAS Dre Parker. His acting was so unbelievably believable that I can't believe he was acting. He was living his role. If I had more than two thumbs to hold up, I'll hold them all up for Jaden. Did I mention that he did all his stunts? And he did some break dancing? Great job, Jaden!
Jackie Chan
I have to start by saying, I love Jackie Chan! His stunt work and his physical comedy is legendary. In this movie, however, Jackie Chan surprised me. I had no idea what a great actor he was. Sure, he's good at comedy--especially physical comedy--and undoubtedly an amazing stunts man, but he took on a serious role in this movie.
Jackie Chan played the role of the maintenance man, Mr. Han, who becomes Dre's mentor and friend. And oh, what a great mentor he was! There is one scene in this movie, where Jackie Chan's acting was so poignant that it brought tears to my eyes. Honestly. I had no idea that Jackie Chan was such a great actor. You have to see him in this movie.
Zhenwei Wang - Honourable Mention
This kid has never acted in another movie before but his debut in "Karate Kid (2010)" was a great debut. Because this was his debut, there's not much information out there about him but I just had to mention him because I thought he did an wonderful job playing Cheng, the main bully. He didn't have many lines, but his body language, facial expressions and actions said it all.
I'm not sure whether Zhenwei did his own stunts but if he did, they were amazing. I can see this kid being the next bad guy in another Kung Fu movie. Or maybe he'll be the good guy next time. Whatever he would be, I know he would always be worthy of mention.
Final Words
This movie is a must-see. Some parts had me laughing some parts had be in tears (and I'm not one to cry from movies). I left the theatre wanting to walk right back in for the next show but unfortunately, I had other obligations. So sad. I definitely want to get this on DVD as soon as it is released.
I hope you enjoy the movie as much as I did.

I like this, yes it was unbelievable believable! Incredible movie and great acting. I saw a TV interview with Jackie and Jaden and I'm not sure who is more proud of Jaden.....Will Smith or Jackie Chan. Good review...I have to see it again. I'm adding two more thumbs up!
I saw this and I have to say I found it to be kind of average at best. If you want to see a really good Kung Fu film with awesome characters and a really engaging story you might like Kung Fu Hustle (dir. Stephen Chow 2004).
this movie is as good as the original one.
i want to see this film
Can i put this movie on my iPod? I want to watch it on bus~~~~
^^ I'm seeing this film on saturday :D! I loveee Cheng aka Zhenwei Wang. He has a twitter btw xD.
I LOVED this movie!! I think that it is way better than the original one only because the acting was way better, the fight scenes were way better.
I am not much for remakes of classic movies , I will wait for it to get to Redbox
Nicely done. My nephew saw it this w/e and enjoyed it. I missed it and will have to catch it another time.
I love Jackie Chan movies. However, I don't like the idea of this remake. It's calles Karate Kid, but they fight Kung Fu
Best encouraging movie! A must see movie for all visionaries, dreamers, for all who feel weak and discouraged too. Two thumbs up!
I liked this movies. It was a very good remake of a classic and it comes from a much different perspective than the original.
I saw this on Monday and although I really had no interest in watching the remake I found it enjoyable. I like Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and am glad their child does not get movie roles just because of his name. He has the ability to act for sure.
Jackie Chan is so great and I hope I never find out he is unlike his onscreen characters because I feel he is a genuinely nice man.
Somehow this movie seemed more profound to me being set in China. The scenery of the Great Wall and the location they went to the pool of water was breathtaking!
Thanks for this review Kimberly!
Thanks for this, I was tossing up whether to see, now I will.
Great review, thanks. Jackie Chan, Jaden and Zhenwei Wang gave engaging performances. The scenery was breath-taking! Only reservation is about the depiction of the violence of the kung-fu matches, especially as this involves young, vulnerable boys.
Good review. I liked this movie. I'll try to find this movie in DVD rent. It looks heroic movie. Good to watch with family. Thank you very much.

I have always like the karate kid series, wax on, wax off... hee with pat morita... this remake held true to the premise, i look to the mountains, from whence cometh my help? in the form of a maintenance man. I like the idea that if one judges a book by its cover, one will definitely miss out. anyway, i like the remake. and I hope it will revive an interest in the older series. Jackie Chan was the bomb. The Shadow scene will always remain in my memory, just like with the first movie with the Crane scene at the end. just plan good entertainment. and the idea that help comes in the strangest forms sometimes, is very cool.
Looking forward to watch it in DVD. That's a great review :)
Thank you for the review. I always enjoy Jackie chan's movie. It always funny and enjoyable to watch. And he is indeed really good in martial art. Never watch Jayden before though. I surely will find time to watch this one. :)

Thanks for the review. Jaden's pretty cool. (look at that pose above, I doubt even ballerina's can do that).
He's put in a lot of effort into this film and it's nice to see one of my favourite Actors Jackie Chan in it too. It must have been fun to make.
Great Hub.
well I have seen karate kid the original one. Jackie Chan, i do not like him as I never seen him at any non fighting role. Maybe this movie helps me to see him from another perspective. I cannot even call Jackie Chan an actor, I actually never thought he is an actor :-).
New karate kid I will probably go to see when it comes into a damm place where I am living.
Great hub Kim xoxoxoxoxoxox- Lizzy
I loved this movie! I just watched it last night with my hubby, and I actually can't wait to watch it again. You really do the movie justice, especially with your hub summary to address the theme of the movie. That was the favorite part for me, how well the story was written. The writers really went above and beyond to create a classic story where both the hero and the mentor learn something from each other. My only complaint about this hub is that you don't mention who wrote the movie.
hola me llamo jesica soy fanatica de zhenwei es muy lindo talves algun dia lo conosca y que seamos amigos

I saw the original "Karate Kid," and it held my attention. But from your description, "kal," this remake is even better. So I'll check it out when it comes to my area. Thanks for the revealing review.
